Peru Announces Modernization of Six Regional Airports to Strengthen Tourism and Global Connectivity

The government of Peru has announced an ambitious plan to modernize six regional airports as part of a strategy to improve national connectivity, boost tourism, and strengthen the country’s role in global logistics.

Prime Minister Denisse Miralles confirmed that the project will advance through an addendum to an existing concession contract expected to be signed in the first half of 2026, unlocking US$454 million in infrastructure investment.

The modernization initiative will focus on airports in key destinations including:

  • Ayacucho

  • Andahuaylas

  • Arequipa

  • Puerto Maldonado

  • Puno

  • Tacna

These improvements are expected to significantly enhance infrastructure, runway conditions, and passenger services, creating stronger links between Peru’s regions and international markets.

Strengthening Tourism and Regional Development

The modernization plan aims to improve logistics connectivity and support Peru’s continued growth as a global travel destination. According to government officials, upgraded airports will help expand access to popular destinations across the Andes and the Amazon, making travel more efficient for both domestic and international visitors.

Enhanced airport infrastructure is also expected to increase investment opportunities, facilitate trade, and promote regional economic development. The improvements include runway rehabilitation, upgraded terminals, and optimized operational capacity.

For the tourism industry, better air connectivity means easier access to iconic destinations such as Machu Picchu, the Amazon rainforest near Puerto Maldonado, and the high-altitude landscapes surrounding Lake Titicaca.

Peru Strengthens Its Position as a Logistics Hub

The announcement was made during the IATA World Cargo Symposium 2026, hosted in Lima. The international event brought together leaders from the global air cargo and aviation industries.

Government representatives emphasized that Peru’s strategic geographic position allows it to serve as a logistics bridge between South America, North America, Europe, and Asia.

Air cargo currently plays a critical role in the country’s economy:

  • More than US$20.7 billion in exports are transported by air

  • Air cargo represents 23% of Peru’s export value

  • The aviation sector contributes approximately US$6 billion to GDP

  • Around 364,000 jobs depend on the aviation and logistics ecosystem

Expanding Global Trade and Investment Opportunities

Peru continues to expand its international economic reach through 23 active trade agreements, giving the country preferential access to economies that represent over 82% of global GDP. Negotiations for 10 additional trade agreements are currently underway to further diversify markets and strengthen global integration.

Officials highlighted that improving airport infrastructure is a key component of maintaining Peru’s economic competitiveness and facilitating international tourism, exports, and investment.

What This Means for Travelers

For international visitors and travel planners, the modernization of Peru’s regional airports promises smoother travel experiences, improved connectivity, and easier access to remote destinations across the country.

As infrastructure continues to improve, travelers can expect faster connections to the Andes, the Amazon, and Peru’s vibrant cultural cities reinforcing the country’s reputation as one of South America’s most dynamic travel destinations.
