Machu Picchu Increases Daily Visitor Capacity for the 2026 High Season

Peru’s most iconic archaeological site, Machu Picchu, will welcome up to 5,600 visitors per day during the 2026 high tourism season, beginning June 19. The increase, announced by Peru’s Ministry of Culture, is designed to accommodate higher visitor demand while maintaining strict conservation measures that protect one of the world’s most treasured cultural landmarks.

The expanded capacity will remain in effect from June 19 through November 2, as well as on December 30 and 31, marking the busiest travel period of the year. During the regular season, the daily visitor limit remains 4,600 people, with access carefully managed through timed entry slots and designated visitor circuits.

The increase follows months of growing tourist arrivals to Cusco and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Since the beginning of the year, demand for entrance tickets has risen significantly, especially as Peru continues to gain international recognition as one of the world’s top travel destinations. Authorities expect the additional capacity to improve visitor access while ensuring an organized and sustainable tourism experience.

Visitors can reach Machu Picchu through several routes, including the scenic railway from Ollantaytambo, the Santa Teresa–Hydroelectric route, and the legendary Inca Trail. The archaeological sanctuary continues to operate under a regulated system that combines online ticket sales with a limited number of in-person tickets available in Machu Picchu Pueblo.

To improve the visitor experience, Peru continues to implement sustainable tourism practices based on the Machu Picchu Master Plan. Access is managed through predefined circuits and scheduled entry times, helping distribute visitor flows while preserving the integrity of the UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations. Officials have emphasized that any future increase in capacity will require comprehensive scientific studies evaluating the site's carrying capacity before new limits are approved.

For travelers planning to visit during the high season, booking well in advance remains highly recommended. Popular circuits and entry times often sell out weeks or even months ahead, particularly during holidays and peak vacation periods. Early planning allows visitors to secure their preferred routes while enjoying a smoother travel experience.

The expanded visitor capacity reflects Peru’s ongoing commitment to balancing tourism growth with heritage conservation. As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and one of South America's most visited attractions, Machu Picchu continues to set an international example of sustainable destination management while welcoming travelers from around the globe.

Whether arriving by train, trekking the legendary Inca Trail, or exploring the Sacred Valley as part of a tailor-made itinerary, visitors can look forward to experiencing one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological sites with improved access and carefully managed visitor services during the 2026 high season.
